How to Introduce a Kitten to an Adult Cat — Quick Guide

arrow_backback

1. Separate at First

  • Keep the kitten in a separate room for the first 1–3 days.
  • Both cats hear each other but don’t meet yet.

2. Swap Scents

  • Exchange blankets or toys.
  • Gently pet one cat, then the other.
  • Calm reaction = ready for next step.

3. First Visual Contact

  • Use a gate, cracked door, or carrier.
  • They can see, but not touch.
  • Light hissing is normal.

4. Play Near Each Other

  • Play with them on opposite sides of a barrier.
  • Positive emotions reduce tension.

5. Short, Supervised Meetings

  • 5–10 minutes together in one room.
  • Stay close and observe.
  • If tension grows — gently separate and try later.

6. Routine Together

  • Eat in the same room (with distance).
  • Playtime together.
  • Each cat should have their own litter box.

7. Full Integration

  • Usually 5–14 days.
  • Success signs: calm behavior, no hissing, shared play.
