Brialla British Cattery — Kitten Owner Checklist

arrow_backback

1. Before Your Kitten Arrives

  • Prepare a quiet room just for the kitten.
  • Remove small objects, strings, rubber bands, and toxic plants.
  • Secure windows and hide electrical cords.

2. Essentials to Prepare

  • Litter box + familiar litter
  • Kitten food (follow breeder recommendations)
  • Fresh water bowl
  • Scratching post
  • Bed or soft blanket
  • Safe toys (no strings or plastic bags)

3. First Days at Home

  • Keep the kitten in one room for 1–3 days.
  • Allow exploration at their own pace.
  • Mild stress is normal: less appetite, more sleep, hiding.
  • Avoid loud noises and overhandling.

4. Feeding

  • Use high-quality Kitten food.
  • Transition to a new brand slowly (5–7 days).
  • No human food, milk, bones, or fatty treats.
  • Fresh water must always be available.

5. Litter Box

  • Show the kitten the litter box immediately.
  • Keep it in one consistent place.
  • Clean daily — kittens are clean by nature.
  • Do not change litter type abruptly.

6. Socialization & Play

  • Play 10–20 minutes daily with safe toys.
  • Redirect biting or scratching to a toy — not hands.
  • Allow the kitten to approach you when ready.
  • Use a calm, gentle voice.

7. Basic Care

  • Brush once or twice a week.
  • Trim nails every 1–2 weeks.
  • Check eyes/ears occasionally (clean only if needed).
  • Practice short, positive carrier training sessions.

8. Health

  • Follow the vaccination and parasite prevention schedule.
  • Visit your veterinarian 2–3 days after arrival.
  • Contact a vet if you notice: no appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, or eye discharge.
  • Never give medications without guidance.

9. If You Have Other Pets

  • Introduce gradually: separate room → scent exchange → visual contact → short meetings.
  • Do not rush introductions.

10. Remember

  • Patience and gentle handling help the kitten adapt faster.
  • Your breeder is always here to support you — feel free to ask questions anytime.
